How Match Play works.
Two players. One team. Another team across from you.
Every hole matters.
Two players. One team.
Each player plays their own ball.
The lowest handicap is the base.
The lowest-handicap player in the match is the base. The other players receive strokes based on their handicap difference from the base. This is illustrative — stroke allocation will be confirmed in the official rules.
Strokes apply by hole.
Strokes are applied on the appropriate handicap holes. On Hole 3 · Par 4 · Handicap 3:
Gross becomes net. Best net counts.
Each player's score minus any stroke is their net score. Each team's best net score is its score for the hole. The better score wins the hole — a hole can be won, lost or halved.
Why a stroke matters.
On Hole 7 · Par 5 · Handicap 7, only Mike receives a stroke.
Mike's stroke turned a 5 into a 4 — and changed the hole.
You don't add up 18 holes. You win holes.
A simple example of a match in progress:
Win more holes than the other team. Win the match.
Now you understand why this feels different.
Sometimes you'll carry your partner.
Sometimes they'll carry you.
You share the pressure.
The decisions.
The momentum.
The wins.
Golf is better when someone is counting on you.
